Don’t Let Your Guard Down

I was watching the 2017 Super Bowl between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots and the underdog Falcons were up 28-3 at halftime. It seemed as if the game was over and both teams would just go through the motions in the second half. But the Falcons came out of the halftime hesitant, playing conservative, and seemed assured and confident of victory. On the other side, the Patriots had a focused, determined and killer demeanor about them. What happened? The Patriots scored 31 unanswered points and won the game. The greatest comeback ever in Super Bowl history.
The Falcons let their guard down. Instead of “playing to win” they started playing “not to lose”. They got off their game plan. Life is a lot like that at times. We find ourselves just going through the motions and wake up one day distracted, bored, and uninspired. As Christians, we must try as hard as we can not to let our “spiritual guards” down. The daily discipline of reading God’s Word, praying, meditating and listening to The Holy Spirit keeps us focused, inspired and encouraged. It keeps us grounded and attentive to the things that are really important, true, and purposeful. Also, our enemy loves to attack us when we let our guard down or we get tired, discouraged and fearful. He strikes hard and he strikes fast. But the good news is that God tells us to put our hope, our trust, and our confidence in Him when we lose our way. He never leaves us and He never forsakes us. It’s up to us though each day to depend on Him, stay in His Word, His Presence and His Holy Spirit. We must not let our guard down. The world, our flesh, and the devil are always waiting for us to just barely “crack the door open” to their lustful, sinful, selfish and rebellious ways. Each day, give your thoughts, your plans, your ways, and your heart to God. Recommit to His ways everyday. Proverbs 16:3 says this; “Commit to The Lord whatever you do each day, and He will establish and guide all of your plans.” Each day, Humble yourself before for The Lord and ask Him to guide you, protect you, help you and encourage you. He will do it.
