His Glorious Inheritance

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you and the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people…”
(Ephesians 1:18)

How much time do we waste in thinking of all of the ways in which we do not measure up?

I wish I was thinner. Funnier. Cooler. Smarter. Prettier. Richer.

Our increased use of social media has convinced us of all that we will never be.

We will never be good enough, smart enough, capable enough, mom enough, dad enough, or just… enough.

This increased awareness provided by Facebook and Instagram has fueled our rampant discontent. And this discontentment has driven us to beat ourselves down like no generation in history.

Would it surprise you to hear that God considers you “His glorious inheritance?”

The God of the Universe, Paul says, considers you the thing He cherishes and looks eagerly forward to above all else.

God, who lacks nothing, who created everything,

has called you to a hope,

and He looks forward to you with enthusiastic anticipation, His eyes twinkling with expectation.

Not because of anything that you’ve done. But because that’s simply who He is.

It’s hard to get our minds wrapped around that. It’s hard to think of ourselves as the Sovereign’s great treasure and prize.

And our thoughts betray us in that pursuit.

But abandon your thoughts here. You’re on new ground. Here your thoughts cannot be trusted.

For His ways are higher than your ways, His thoughts higher than yours.

And He says you are His treasure.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened to this.

And you let that change you.
